Parish Relations Committee Meeting Regularly
Hope UCC’s Parish Relations Committee (PRC) has been meeting monthly since April 2021. The committee members are: Cathy Boeset, Dan Evers, Gwen Klima, and Melena Urbanowski. Boeset and Evers bring with them previous experience being part of a PRC in Burlington and here at Hope UCC.
The committee serves in two primary ways:
- As an advisory group to the pastor: sharing ideas, dreams, expectations, and concerns of the congregation with the pastor;
- As a support group for the pastor’s leadership: interpreting roles, functions, boundaries, opportunities, and needs of the pastor and the congregation.
The goal of the PRC is to promote faithful, shared ministry between pastor and congregation. The committee works in a context of confidentiality, support, care, and honesty with the pastor, while promoting healthy communication in the congregation as a whole.
A PRC is not an appropriate place to circumvent church processes of decision-making, for committee members to relay anonymous complaints, for individual members to lobby for or enact their own ambitions for church life, or to empanel an adversarial group opposed to the pastor’s leadership. They do not lead the process of pastoral evaluations.
According to our church’s by-laws (Article IX), the committee is to be made of up three to seven people and will meet as needed and follow the guidelines developed by the United Church of Christ. Currently the PRC is using the publication, A Sure Foundation, from the UCC as a guide.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19.
